In any discussion of Smart Cars, terms must be defined. There is, after all, a Smart Car. It was invented by the man who invented the Swatch Watch, and it’s small and extremely fuel efficient. However, the term Smart Car has become, like Xerox, an adjective rather than a proper noun. People use the word Xerox to describe nearly any kind of office copier, and now more frequently, people are using the term “Smart Car” to describe almost any fuel efficient automobile.

There are many “Smart Cars” in America these days ranging from the original Smart Car, now called Smart Fortwo since it will carry two people, that gets an average of 33 Miles Per Gallon (MPG) city and 41 MPG Highway, to the Honda Accord, 22 MPG City and 31 MPG Highway or Hyundai Sonata which gets 22MPG City and 32 MPG Highway. The reason this is a range is because the Smart Fortwo is a small smart car while the Accord and Sonata are considered large compact smart cars.

The Smart Fortwo is a two-seater and it has two companions in that categry. The Pontiac Solstice gets 19MPG City and 28MPG Highway and the Saturn Sky which also gets 19MPG City and 28MPG Highway. With the redesigning of General Motors, both the Pontiac Division and the Saturn division have been eliminated. So these two models won’t be available any longer.

In the mini compact category is, of course the Mini Cooper. It is easy to confuse the name Toyota Yaris with Toyota’s other smart car, the Toyota Prius. This little number is electric and the mileage looks backwards. It gets 48 MPG City and 45 MPG Highway. The reason for this reversal is that in town, the gasoline engine does not run as often as it does at highway speeds. The Prius is a mid size compact car along with the Nissan Versa which gets 26 MPG City and 31 MPG Highway.

The Honda civic which gets 40 MPG City and 45 MPG Highway, and the Volkswagen Jetta which gets 31 MPG City and 41 MPG Highway are classed in the compact category. As mentioned above, the Hyundai Sonata and the Honda Accord are considered to be in the large compact category.

It is evident that, depending on the point of view, there are many smart cars in America even though they are not all actually called Smart Car by name. Size alone does not make an automobile a “smart car”. From two seater to mini compact to sub compact to compact, and on up the line to mid size compact and large compact both of which can easily carry four people and luggage, there are many smart cars in America.
